Why it matters
Loneliness is a growing challenge in Hyndburn, with 13.2% of the local population reporting chronic loneliness. Nationally, 49% of people aged 65+ experience regular loneliness, and those living in single-occupancy homes are particularly vulnerable. Social isolation can have serious effects on a person’s health, contributing to mental health problems, physical decline, and even shortening life expectancy.
At Open Arms Hyndburn, we are committed to addressing these issues by offering a lifeline of friendship, emotional support, and social connection. Our work is vital because it ensures that people, particularly the elderly and isolated, are not left to face these struggles alone. By fostering meaningful relationships and a sense of community, we aim to improve well-being and create a more connected, supportive society for everyone.

Our approach
At Open Arms Hyndburn, our approach is faith-based, grounded in the Christian values of love, compassion, and respect. We create a non-judgmental environment where everyone is welcome, regardless of their background, beliefs, or life choices.
We integrate key social work principles into our practice to ensure we take an evidence-based, person-centered approach. Our volunteer training draws on a strengths-based practice, equipping our volunteers with the skills and knowledge to provide the best possible support.
We also value ongoing reflection and feedback. By regularly evaluating our services and seeking input from those we serve, as well as our volunteers, we ensure that Open Arms Hyndburn remains responsive to the evolving needs of the community and continues to grow and improve.
